In service since 1964, the R-17 Elbrus, also designated R-300, but made famous since the 1991 Gulf War under its NATO reporting name SS-1C Scud-B, is a Soviet tactical ballistic missile which served in some 32 countries and was produced at an estimated 7000 copies. The Scud B is carried on a powerful eight-wheeled MAZ-543 vehicle. The missile is hydraulically raised to a vertical position in 4 minutes but the total firing sequence take about one hour. The missile has a range of 300 km and can carry a conventional, chemical or nuclear warhead. The NVA (East-German army) possessed 18 Scud B launchers.
